So the weather man tells me we are in a heat wave and look to be in one for the next few days. And guess what, after that summer still won’t be over so while it may be a little late to get ready for this heat wave let’s make sure we are ready for the next one.
I found a post on a www.homeownernet.com about A/C checkups. While I do recommend having your heat and air man do a regular check up on your unit there were some great tips here. Some of you might not be comfortable checking belt tensions and tightening them others may. Also checking the temp difference between the return air and the air diffusers may seem intimidating for some but you can buy a digital thermometer fairly cheap and do this easily. Either way there are tips on this article anyone can do. Here are three I started with.
- Go outside and inspect unit. Is there vegetation that is grown up around the unit or anything else that would restrict the airflow? IF so remove whatever is limiting the air flow.
- While you are outside inspect the line from the condenser to the compressor and make sure the insulation is in good shape. If not replace it. Also look at the evaporator and condenser coil fins to see if they are bent. If they are bent straighten them as best you can. Bent fins limit the air flow and make your unit work harden then it needs to and makes it not cool as well.
- Change your air filters once a month.
- Go to your local hardware store and ask for a product that will let you clean your air coils. This is not hard and will help a great deal
Follow the link to the article for a full list of items that you need to check. And for best results have your heat and air man set you up on a yearly inspection schedule. He or she can catch problems early that can save you lots of money in the long run.
